Why is Obama labeled the first african american President?

How about we leave race, heritage and culture out of the Presidency?

Otherwise, lets label all the Presidents by their heritage and make them out to be the first, second, or third in their respective categories.

It's sad when you can't just call yourself an American President. You divide people by saying Obama is the first african american President. You want to unite the country, forget about labels and move on.Why is Obama labeled the first african american President?
True...the media and some of the radical people are peddling that. I think to intimidate and scare people.

I really don't care about the color or religion of the President...it is policy and actions that are important!
Because if you understood the black struggles in this country, you would understand how important this is. My father (and I'm 30) wasn't allowed to go into the library while working on his PhD in the 60's. He had to get a PhD because no one was hiring educated blacks in the 60s unless they had a PhD. To go from not being able to enter the library to becoming a President, that's the end of a long struggle. Oh yeah, as if not entering the library wasn't bad enough, we also couldn't get loans to open businesses or get a job that paid more than $1/hr. What is a man supposed to do to raise his family if he can't get a job that pays more than $1/hour?Why is Obama labeled the first african american President?
Because the ones that label him, are black, and claim not to be racist. So it is a Great accomplishment to them.

And when are they going to get over what their own people did to their Ancestors, not them...

People move to America for freedom, judged not by color and treated equal.

If you can't accomplish something, it has nothing to do with your race in America, it's all on you!
It is sad.

But you can't deny that race/ethnicity plays a major role in your country.

You guys will never really be united as one.

Most of you are too ignorant to see that America's greatest weakness is division ((RACISM))

Please believe that your supposed enemies know this and will use it to their advantage everybloodytime!

Why is Obama labeled the first african american President?
Its funny and true. He is an american president reguardless of his color or heritage, he is a president who is supposed to represent ALL the people in the USA.

If white people had White entertainment television, or White awards ceremonies, Or labeled things according to our race we are called racisit....but its ok for black people to be racist...I dont get it, for all the talk about being "equal" there sure are a lot of separatist issues on race.
I understand what you are trying to say but simply put, he is often called the first "African-American" president because he is. It is a turning point in American history. Civil Rights activist and many American people have fouhgt hard to get to this point. Although, I consider him the American President, my cultural background can't help but view him as a victory for African-Americans. If you are not African-American it might be a little harder for you to understand.

Look, I can't stand the guy, but, he IS the first African-American President.

It is "historic" . . . . yeah . . . fine . . . whatever. I oppose him because he is a FAR Left, liberal with shady friends. . . . I oppose him because he sounds very much like a Socialist, who wants to build a big Welfare state of people sitting on their butts, .. . . but voting for anyone willing to bankroll them staying on that couch, watching tv.

Like him or dispise him . . . he IS the first African-American President

Dan in Miami

He is.

They do label other presidents by their heritage. It's well known the Kennedy was the first catholic president. The made a pretty big deal out of that. Where were you when they were calling Clinton the first 'black president'. He is way less black than Obama.

He is an American president. Who has called him anything different?
But United States is like United Nations, with Whites, Spanish, blacks, Indians and Asians. Guess what, all minorities together will be majorities. So we should account for the different cultures, race and religion, to be able to live in harmony and united. This is in contrast to the Bush administration, who want to impose their ultra-conservative minority view on the majority.
well i thought he was a mulatto. He isnt 100% black is he? Ill tell you id like to see as Prez, George Jefferson from the TV show. Come here weezie, ill bust you up. Or Maybe Mr T. I pity the fool who raises taxes. Oh I know Eddie Murphy......Im not gonna fall for the bannana in the tailpipe. Hilarious.
The fact that he IS the first Black president.

He was elected by his perceived ability and leadership by all ethnicity voters, not based on his skin color.

But the fact remains, he IS the first black president of the USA, and has made history.

Its just a HUGE accomplishment for the US. i dont think that it is supposed to be a racial thing, its supposed to be a proud thing. Like he can tell his family: "I was the FIRST black president in America."

That would be a HUGE accomplishment to me.
I don't know how people could even consider him African American. His mother is pure white, and his father is from Kenya. I don't see where Africa plays a role here. Obama is a white man with dark skin, and the African Americans are going to figure this out.
It will stick because we still use those labels, Kennedy was the first Catholic president and someday there will be a woman in the office. That is the way it is, let it be and don't make more of it than it really is
Kennedy was the first Irish Catholic President.

Clinton claimed to be the first Black President.

Washington was the first White President.
Because he is African American. Why all of a sudden mixed people should have another label? because you want to feel good that he's not completely Black? He is the FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT. You PRESIDENT
In the 1980s he wanted to be white and named Barry - but that didn't allow him to push his color and name. So he decided to be black and that's what we get.
I agree. I abhor the hyphenated American label. Obama will be our first 1/2 black president, but I prefer saying that Obama will be our 44th president.
You are so right, I don't look at him as a african american, I look at him as an american and we need to stop labeling everything.
Of course that would be ideal if we didn't have a persistent prejudiced population that instantly discredits someone based on the color/tone of their skin.
Actually, Bill Clinton was labelled the first african-american President by the NAACP during his second term.
Just 230 years ago this country was enslaving black people.

I think it is highly appropriate to point out the incredible lengths we have come as a people.
because he is black. It is historical lebron james and chris rock said it the best this the first where black parents can tell there children that they can be anything they want and MEAN IT.

very true, besides he has half african american genes and half white genes..i do not know why they label him as a only "black president"
Obama is about the six or seventh Black POTUS read the sources

Because that is how he marketed himself.
He's unfortunately not. They already gave that title to Bill Clinton.
The old "One Drop Rule" still applies, sadly.
Well, what else should we call him, wasn't Clinton the first black president?
Isn't that obvious?
Yes.
